New Footage from the Game of Thrones Set at Italica (aka the Dragonpit)

There’s new footage as Game of Thrones continues their load in to the ruins of Italica in Spain. Check out video of the dragon pit being assembled. Meanwhile the city council of Santiponce Seville has announced the dates the area will be closed for filming.

The big news this morning out of Seville this morning is that the archaeological sight area fans are calling “The Dragon Pit” will be closed for nearly a month for filming. Starting tomorrow, October 17th and running until nearly mid November, the area will be shut down for major set load in and filming. ABCSevilla reports that work on the set, plus filming, will involve over 400 cast and crew members altogether. The area will re-open to tourists November 12th.

Meanwhile, load in for the set had begun, though since the area is still open to the public, nothing has gone in yet that would contain any telltale signs indicating if this is really the Dragon Pit or not. Instead it’s mostly decking and platforms over top of the ruins. (We should note it effectively turns the area underneath into a dank underground catacomb, such as we imaged the dragon’s lair to have been.)

Canal, the source for much of the behind the scenes filming footage the last time Game of Thrones filmed in Seville, once again is our go to source for what’s happening on the ground.

Will we be as lucky as we were during Season 5, when Canal+ was invited to visit behind the scenes with the actors during filming? We’ll have to wait and find out. Until then, we’ll be watching to see which actors arrive on the filming site in the next week or two. Depending on who shows up, we could get a confirmation on some of those really out-there rumors that have started cropping up about the coming season.
