Game of Thrones preps ships, horses, and extras before shooting scenes in Malpartida

Filming prep for Game of Thrones Season 7 is underway in the city of Malpartida de Cáceres, in Spain. According to Spanish website Hoy, the production has rented rented at least six ships, and has hired several security guards to guard them. Guards also keep the press away from getting inside a building where props are being stored. Vicente Rodriguez, a local carpenter, also tells the outlet that horses are on the way.

The production will shoot material in the area over the course of 22 days, from November 14 to December 15. When we first heard that the production would visit this area, we figured it would shoot at the scenic Barrueco de Abajo, which Hoy points out is a popular destination. In reality, it’ll shoot material at the less touristy Barrueco de Arriba, pictured at the top of this post. That’s likely where the ships will come into play.

Hoy notes that the production will be filming battles during its stay here, but word is they mostly won’t be filmed on the waterfront. For the fights, the production will shoot on a private estate near Malpartida called Las Breñas.

The scenes require a lot of extras. Per Hoy, 450 were selected to play soldiers from an initial pool of 3000, which was actually well below estimates of 8,000 to 10,000.

The extras are required to turn up around a week before filming so they can be trained by two British army instructors. Verisimilitude is the name of the game.

HOY also contacted area hotels to see if any cast members would be staying in Malpartida. It ends up that a producer has made inquires regarding four rooms, but there’s no reservation placed as yet, nor is there word on who the rooms might be for. We’ll keep you apprised of any updates out of Malpartida as they happen.
