When most of us walk into a job interview, we are forced to sit and entertain a series of questions designed to determine our suitability for the position. Some of the questions might be harder to answer than others, and we might even get a bit uncomfortable. But no job interview you have been a part of could ever be as uncomfortable as the one Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) endured for her role on Game of Thrones, and we have seen a few.
The following, is not safe for work. Or children.
On a recent appearance on the Graham Norton Show, Whelan relayed the details of her audition scene. According to Mashable, HBO requested Whelan act out the first scene in which we meet Yara, her reunion with brother Theon Greyjoy. This being Game of Thrones however, that reunion was not your typical happy family affair.
Fans will remember that the brother and sister duo had not seen each other in over a decade, and thus did not recognize one another (at least Theon did not recognize Yara, Yara’s knowledge is unclear). Theon being Theon, begins to touch his sister in rather inappropriate ways. And if that scene wasn’t already awkward, Whelan described the horse on which they rode as rather “farty.”
Back to the audition though, the original scene had Yara “worrying on” Theon, and not the other way around. Whelan thankfully handled the situation like a professional, though the one cameraman present apparently did not like her, well, her technique. Perhaps it was all a test to see how much she wanted the part? Either way, we are glad Whelan landed the role, and hopefully it remains the toughest audition she ever has.
